Knowledge is Power!

22 Jan

It may just be me but I have always believed that books and running go hand and hand. Especially when you may or may not have a slight fictional crush on the main character of the book you are reading. There is nothing like a rebellious prep school boy who drops the GD word appropriately in every conversation and details his awkward yet intriguing teenage sexual experiences to keep your mind off the ticking clock on the treadmill dash. Yes, you guessed it, I am referring to Holden Caulfield in The Catcher in the Rye, siiigh.

This brings me to our latest obsession(s): The never ending quest for a rock hard body AND audio books. When paired together this duo makes for a tasty treat with zero calories and tons of intellectual brownie points.

I obviously recommend The Catcher in the Rye and, although its not an audio book yet, Courtney will never be caught at the gym without the latest NYLON, but there are many many books out there waiting to be downloaded to your ipod. So check out the list below of my all time fave books to find out where your next literature crush is hiding and get some tips on LEGAL downloading here.

1. On the Road – Jack Kerouac
2. Dharma Bums – Jack Kerouac
(Who can resist a Beat Generation hipster who loves wine and traveling?? Not I, thats for sure)
4. The Catcher in the Rye – J.D. Salinger
5. Diary – Chuck Palahniuck
6. The Rachel Papers– Martin Amis
(Just another well spoken rebel boy living in London)
7. Walden – Henry David Thoreau
(Yes, its a classic… Yes, you MUST try it)
8. The Glass Castle – Jeannette Walls
(A memoir about the coolest girl I’ve never met)
10. Anything Sarah Dessen, I personally suggest The Truth About Forever, This Lullaby, Keeping the Moon, Someone Like You, and That Summer
OK.. stop laughing. I am serious!! I promise you will find one of these books resonating with your high school experiences and the nostalgia will take you far from the gym and the hour and half you have left on the Elliptical.

*NOTE: I know some of these books are rather new and probably will not be on audio yet but I guarantee they are worth the search and if you can’t find them… paperback will never go out of style.

Happy running and reading,
